What We Believe

We affirm the historic orthodox Christian faith as it is expressed in the Bible and understood by the church through the centuries. We believe in charitable dialogue, unity on essentials of the faith, space for multiple views on non-essential issues, openness, great questions, and respectful disagreement. We are constantly exploring and wrestling to find fresh, new ways to express and communicate the teachings of Jesus.

Our denomination, the Evangelical Covenant Church, has historically emphasized six distinctives…

The centrality of the Word of God

We believe the Bible to be inspired by God who used the poems, stories, accounts, letters and stories of many to compose his word. We believe the Scriptures are more alive, transforming, and relevant than ever, and we seek to come under its guidance and authority for our lives.

The necessity of the new birth

We embrace the salvation Jesus offers as the only hope for the healing of our relationships with God, each other, ourselves, and the world. By the grace of God through Jesus, they move from death to life, becoming a new creation.

A commitment to the whole mission of the church

We believe that God wants to put the world back together – and that includes every part of us. As Jesus puts back together our brokenness, fears, pasts, and failures, we believe we will be change agents of the world around us as well. Through words and deeds, we desire to carry out God’s mission in own backyard and beyond.

The church as a fellowship of believers

We believe that we were created to live intimately and deeply together, sharing our stuff, carrying each other's burdens, suffering and celebrating together. We believe the way of Jesus calls us not to live our lives alone, but as a family committed to God and each other.

A conscious dependence on the Holy Spirit

We desire to move in the guidance and strength of the Spirit, carrying out God’s purposes for us and growing in love with God and with people. We seek to be challenged, comforted, stretched, empowered and transformed. Because the Christian life is a relationship, change is assumed and transformation expected.

The reality of freedom in Christ

We believe that good Bible-believing, spirit-filled followers of Jesus can be united while allowing one another to hold differing convictions and beliefs. In those places where the Scripture is not clearly spoken, we believe that knowledge submits to love because of our shared connection and unity in Christ.
